Episodes Summary

Episode 1: Arrival in Maju

A first episode of The Impossible Heir begins with Han Tae-oh exiting a bus and entering Maju’s peaceful streets. Even though the town might look nothing special and quite normal, the cautious eye of Tae-oh is surrounded by enigma. He has got a little bag with him, takes stealthy steps and is casting suspicious glances—all those traits are telling of the brilliance and the keen observation that are his. Tae-oh finds a little room at the rooftop and slips in, thus starting to undergo his gradual change in lifestyle.

Na Hye-won, with her mother nearby, occupies her own small space across the rooftops, revealing her private tragic landscape. Their lives take different paths, but appear parallel and possess independent struggles.

In the nearby streets, Kang In-ha emerges with an almost wild vigor. He takes minor goods while riding his motorcycle with bold confidence, making the villagers suspicious yet powerless to stop him. In-ha is obviously bold and an outcast, whose very presence is opposite to the reserved enclosure of Tae-oh.

The first meeting between the two creates a scene of confrontation when Tae-oh accuses In-ha of shoplifting. He advises him that stealing is an art and that he should select bigger items if he desires to go that route. The following day they bump into each other again in the same class. In-ha immediately displays his power by pushing and provoking Tae-oh thereby causing a fight. The two are obviously linked through curiosity, competition, and recognition of each other’s power, despite their taking part in the fight.

Then, Tae-oh’s tranquil day is interrupted by a phone call. The anxiety that haunts his life becomes clear as he rushes to the convent where his mother has been hiding: his father has discovered her and poses a real danger . The tension is immediate and acute as men scour the neighborhood while she flees on a bus. In these scenes, the stakes are really important for Tae-oh and show his cunning, strategic planning as well as protection instincts.

The boxing ring scene heats up even more with In-ha’s challenge for Tae-oh to prove his value. Boxing is a contest where the combatants exhibit not only their brute force but also their mental smarts to a great extent. The fight’s winner has to be none other than Tae-oh. In-ha acknowledges this but is still not completely ready to join the winner’s circle. He extends a hand of friendship towards the already shocked Tae-oh.

A little later, while they are at school, Tae-oh’s classmates pick on him for his family’s dark past and for being a murderer’s/ (the son’s) son. In-ha, however, unexpectedly steps in, although the punishments he metes out are light in comparison to Tae-oh’s reaction. That night, on a rooftop, he opens up to In-ha and suggests a partnership of sorts: he will assist In-ha in getting some influence over the Kangoh family while In-ha, in turn, will help him to gain a higher social status. Ambition makes them both active. Once again, the principle of reciprocity is working back and forth.

A private, quiet moment concludes the show. Tae-oh and In-ha are in the loft. They drink cocktails (again) and secretly engage in some planning for the future and look around. Then, Tae-oh sees Na Hye-won across the rooftops, and they exchange a quick look, but it is already full of gradually increasing love. The camera merely sticks to their faces so that the audience feels that the intricate and subtle story of unseen aspirations, unstable partnerships, and fragile connections has barely begun to unfold.

Episode 2: University life begins

Han Tae-oh is shown in the first scene of the episode standing at the door of his small rooftop flat, thinking about his future. He has lived a solitary and watchful life in Maju, but Kang In-ha’s entrance upends this peaceful way of life. In-ha’s wildness and non-conformity challenge the boundaries that Tae-oh has set for himself with great care. The tension between the two as well as the silent mutual understanding both ways result in a very complicated relationship between them.

Meanwhile, a university classmate named Na Hye-won gets involved in their lives. She faces Tae-oh’s rejection when she first asks for his help. But after she persists and finds In-ha, a mild competition develops between the two guys as they compete for her love and admiration. Because Hye-won’s objectives are yet unknown, the dynamics that are developing are made more intriguing.

The Kangoh family’s internal conflicts come into light as the story goes on. Within the family business, Chairman Kang Joong-mo’s offspring are vying for influence and power, challenging his authority. In-ha’s status as the illegitimate son puts him in conflict with his biological brothers, underscoring the intricate network of ties and goals that characterize the Kangoh power.

Tae-oh’s report captures Professor Chae Dong-uk’s attention, highlighting his academic expertise. Tae-oh’s talent is acknowledged by the professor, who gives the report to Kang Seong-ju, the second son of the Kangoh Group. With this deed, Tae-oh enters the Kangoh family’s sphere of influence and unpredictably entwines his destiny with theirs.

In the midst of these happenings, In-ha’s private life takes on a major role. A chain of events, which in turn lead to the characters’ relationships being more strained, is initiated when Kang Hee-ju, his half-sister, starts to have feelings for Tae-oh. A chaotic blend of emotions and reasons comes up as In-ha’s care for the family overlaps with her love for Hye-won becoming stronger.

As the episode reaches the boiling point, Tae-oh and In-ha try to predict the temperature of their relationships with Hye-won vs their aspirations within the Kangoh Family. This power struggles together with jealousy and the need for attention combine to form a situation that results in difficult and unpredictable cross-border rivalries. These rivalries are surprising and sometimes even impossible to forecast. The sly motives along with the burning desire to gain higher status of the involved parties indicate their readiness to go against their principles and morals to realize their objectives.

At the end of the episode five years had passed, as revealed by the time jump, with changes visible in Tae-oh and In-ha’s lives. Highlighting their scale, impact and strategic understanding, they celebrate the fifth anniversary of the Center for Co-Prosperity Collaboration, a joint venture they founded. Now essential to the business because of all of their preparations and unity of purpose. As the episode draws to a close, the suspense keeps on getting stronger, foreshadowing the next fights, the trust issues, and the intricate partnerships that will determine the future wars.

Episode 3: Cracks Behind the Partnership

At the beginning of episode 3, there has been a five-year gap and both Han Tae-oh and Kang In-ha have been promoted up the ladder in the Kangoh Group. Both men are no longer considered “outsiders,” and their Centre for Co-Prosperity Collaboration has become extremely influential. While In-ha enjoys all the limelight he’s always craved, the famed accolades he has long desired, and the attention he receives; Tae-oh enjoys a much more subdued lifestyle and continues to work in silence on his plans and negotiating with extreme efficiency.

There are indications that their friendship is deteriorating even though no obvious rift exists between Tae-oh and In-ha at the present time. In contrast, In-ha has seen that there is a growing bond between Tae-oh and Na Hye-won in the office and noted how Tae-oh has become more outgoing around her. Although Tae-oh tries to act indifferent and unemotional toward Hye-won, he still demonstrates concern for her in spite of himself (through small gestures of protection). In-ha knows about every one of Tae-oh’s behaviours but conceals his jealousy behind a façade of humour.

At Kangoh Group, the family rivalry grows more dangerous. Chairman Kang Joong-mo begins testing his sons to decide who deserves more authority within the company. Tae-oh cleverly helps In-ha navigate the political games inside the family, teaching him how to manipulate meetings, gain allies, and hide weakness. In-ha slowly realizes Tae-oh’s intelligence is the only reason he can survive among the Kangoh heirs.

When one of the family members publicly denigrates In-ha for being illegitimate during a private dinner meeting, the animosity escalates. Tae-oh uses strategy and facts to quietly turn the tide and humiliate the opponent before In-ha may respond emotionally. For the first time, In-ha realizes just how vicious Tae-oh can get when defending his schemes.

The ending is toned down from before and very emotional. In a late-night conversation with Hye-Won, he asks him if ambition brings anyone any real happiness. He does not give a direct answer but his silence gives out plenty of clues. From a distance, In-Ha is watching them together and she fears the balance of being a friend or being in love and having ambition, is beginning to dissolve.

Episode 4: Dangerous Loyalties

The developing friction between Han Tae-oh, Kang In-ha, and Na Hye-won is explored more deeply in episode 4. As part of their ongoing rise within the Kangoh Group, the level of mutual trust that has previously existed between Tae-oh and In-ha has become increasingly strained. For the first time in his life, In-ha is receiving a sense of power and prestige and as a result he has begun acting far less rationally than has been his normal behaviour. On the other hand, Tae-oh remains focused on his long range goals and ambitions of power.

Because In-ha and Tae-oh have this unique and complicated relationship, Hye-won becomes caught between these two men. Hye-won sees In-ha’s future loneliness and desire for love, however, she admires Tae-oh’s quiet confidence and brilliant demeanor. The conflict within their relationship manifests itself in many scenes, including In-ha’s attempts at publicly displaying his affection for her. While Tae-oh may act indifferent to these situations, his actions tell a different story.

The battle for power continues to escalate at the Kangoh Group. Chairman Kang Joong-mo suspects that Tae-oh is advancing too quickly for his own good; therefore he is beginning to investigate him without making his intentions known to Tae-oh. Tae-oh can intuit that there is danger ahead of him and starts looking into contingency plans without letting In-ha know. As a result of this need for secrecy, In-ha begins to feel more and more disconnected from the decision making process than she had before.

A major turning point comes during an important business presentation. Tae-oh brilliantly saves the company from a financial mistake caused by another executive, earning admiration from the board members. Instead of celebrating together, In-ha feels overshadowed once again.

In-ha’s hidden jealousy slowly turns into reckless anger and emotional outbursts. Meanwhile, Hye-won accuses Tae-oh of treating people like chess pieces. Though he coldly defends himself, her words clearly affect him. Later, Tae-oh and In-ha argue bitterly on the rooftop that once symbolized their friendship, now filled only with distrust. In-ha asks Tae-oh if he still sees him as a friend or merely a tool to use, and his hesitation in answering questions shows the strength of their alliance.

Episode 5 :Betrayal Begins

In the first scene of Episode 5, the environment within Kangoh Group is getting colder and more antagonistic. Although Han Tae-oh’s increasing prominence continues to garner notice, it also makes adversaries within the Kangoh family and the corporation. The executives have now begun hearing about Tae-oh using his influence in various situations (circling influence usage) and this creates added tension for both Tae-oh and In-ha.

Living under Tae-oh’s shadow frustrates In-ha deeply. Although Tae-oh helped him succeed, In-ha feels constantly overlooked, and his jealousy grows stronger after realizing Hye-won naturally trusts Tae-oh more than anyone else.

Hye-won, meanwhile, is mentally worn out by the ongoing stress in her immediate environment. She observes Tae-oh putting his goals ahead of his feelings and sees In-ha succumbing to pride and jealousy. She asks Tae-oh in a frank talk if he has ever desired a normal existence free from power struggles. Tae-oh acknowledges in private that people who are similar to him do not have normal lives.

Chairman Kang Joong-mo hosts a significant family gathering when the episode’s emotional core comes. In-ha makes a valiant effort to demonstrate his worth to the family, but he is ultimately driven insane by yet another embarrassing incident. When Tae-oh intervenes to defend him once more, In-ha is offended by the sympathy that underlies Tae-oh’s efforts rather than feeling appreciative.

Anger and insecurity between the two buddies finally erupt later that evening. Tae-oh is accused by In-ha of treating everyone including himself and Hye-won like chess pieces. In response, Tae-oh reminds In-ha that he would not have survived within the Kangoh family without him. During the confrontation, years of suppressed annoyance rise to the surface.

The episode concludes with a startling change in mood. After the altercation, In-ha stands by himself and quietly acknowledges that his allegiance to Tae-oh is starting to erode. Ambition begins to outweigh friendship for the first time.

Episode 6 : Shifting sides

In the first scene of Episode 6, Kang In-ha is sitting by himself in his car late at night following his altercation with Han Tae-oh. As he realizes that their friendship has changed, the fury on his expression gradually turns to frustration. The alliance that once enabled them to climb together now feels precarious and rife with covert animosity.

Tae-oh presents himself as unchanged within Kangoh Group. He maintains his typical composed demeanor while managing meetings, negotiations, and business-related issues, but his emotional distance grows. Rather than depending on In-ha, he discreetly starts planning backup plans and forging closer ties with powerful executives.

Meanwhile, In-ha becomes irritated at constantly being perceived as inferior to Tae-oh. He begins making dangerous business decisions without first consulting anyone since he is determined to impress himself. His rash actions cause conflict within the organization and draw unwelcome attention from the Kangoh family.

Na Hye-won observes the two men growing apart more and more. After In-ha acts aggressively at a party, she confronts him and warns him that jealousy is slowly ruining him. Her compassion for Tae-oh is becoming increasingly apparent, therefore her comments caused him great pain.

At the end of this episode, Tae-oh finds out that one of the members of the Kangoh Group is quietly plotting against him. He demonstrates that he has transformed into a dangerous, shrewd person by preparing for retaliation without overreacting.
