Red Swan” is a Korean suspense-mystery drama that follows Oh Wan-soo, a former golfer who marries into the wealthy Hwain family, only to uncover dark secrets hidden behind their luxurious life. Episodes Summary:
Episode 1: Threats Unveiled
The first episode of Red Swan starts with a powerful and moving scene where the philanthropist and golfer Oh Wan-soo, in her role as head of the NOW Foundation, gives a triumphant speech at the UNICEF office in New York. The audience listens to her recounting the story of her efforts to help war victims and other repressed people with a voice that is both strong and gentle. Wan-soo’s calm outside is a front to a very turbulent inner life, in spite of the huge respect and confidence in the atmosphere. Her in-laws have established a hostile and controlling environment when she returns to Korea after the triumphant event. Wan-soo is met with harsh criticism from Park Mi-ran, the strong and dominant chairwoman of the Hwain Group, who is upset with her for putting the foundation before her family responsibilities. By her tough comments and frightening demeanor, Mi-ran makes it abundantly evident that she has complete authority over the family and their economic empire. She also cautions Wan-soo from getting involved in anything that she views as her territory.
Wan-soo’s past and the circumstances surrounding her marriage to Kim Yong-gook, the Hwain Group’s heir, are then revealed through a flashback in the story. Yong-gook suggests to Wan-soo in the charity event sponsored by the Hwain Group, in Africa that she should give up her golf life and get married with him. She hesitates at first, but then says yes; for she thinks they will be happy with each other. But once she returns to Korea, she is met with Mi-ran’s animosity.
The harsh power dynamics and stifling expectations of the Hwain family are shown via the humiliating and dominating prenuptial process she must endure. In these opening moments, Wan-soo is introduced as a lady torn between her own goals and the expectations of a family that wants to control her life.
The demands of her marriage and the harsh home environment are difficult for Wan-soo to handle in the current period. She takes refuge in a bar after an intense confrontation with Mi-ran, where her feelings and disappointments ultimately take control of her and get her drunk. In this very moment, Seo Do-yoon, a skilled fighter, and a former police officer sees her vulnerability. He demonstrates self-control and protective instincts and takes Wan-soo to her room to make sure she is quiet. They appear to be in tune with one another, as their quiet but full of feelings interchange shows. Wan-soo is aware of her weakness, but Do-yoon keeps acting professionally, yet it is obvious from his close watch that he is not just a spectator.
The assassination attempt on Wan-soo raises the stakes even more. She is being pursued by a sniper in Manila and is on her way to death until Do-yoon saves her just before the bullet kills her. He later finds an electronic tracking device concealed in her vehicle, suggesting that the danger against her was not only anticipated but also well planned. This increases the adrenaline factor to death by revealing that Wan-soo is actually in danger and that her cause has strong adversaries.
Do-yoon takes resolute measures to safeguard Wan-soo, and the program builds suspensefully and intriguedly toward its concluding minutes. He becomes her official bodyguard and joins the Hwain Group’s security squad. Aside from ensuring her safety right away, the decision also sets up a complex relationship between the characters. To maintain the dramatic and suspenseful interaction that is necessary for the story’s progression, the episode finishes with Wan-soo going back to her place where Do-yoon is keeping watch over her due to the threat that is about to arise.
Episode 2: The SD Card Revelation
The opening scene features the noise of glass shattering and swift footsteps echoing all over the Hwain household. Wan-soo feels danger in every nook and corner and carefully makes his way through the dimly lit corridor where shadows are moving all around. Seo Do-yoon is watching from afar, his sharp sight looking for any threat. The silent, stealthy creeping of the staff on its tiptoeing journey grips the nerves –the house is alive with tension and it feels as if it is breathing down your neck. The world is one of secrets, danger and silent alliances that the audience is immediately drawn into, in a story in which trust is fragile and every choice has dire consequences.
An impressive flashback just then enters the story, shedding some light on Wan-soo’s youth, which hailed of adversity and relentlessness. For a small error, her mother, a dedicated caddie at a nearby golf course, is wrongfully dismissed by the future chairperson of the Hwain Group. She steals a set of worthless and immaculate golf clubs from Kim Yong-gook and gives them to Wan-soo, outraged but determined to give her daughter a better future. Wan-soo embarks on a quest to become a world champion in golf when this audacious act of disobedience fuels her career. Nevertheless, the triumph comes with a price; Wan-soo ends up severing ties and confronting existence solo as her mother’s addiction to gambling consumes the income she makes through her labor. Along with talent and aspiration, Wan-soo inherits the unshakeable determination to live on in a world that can be extremely rough and ruthless in the making of a character.
During the splendid charity ball, Wan-soo moved like a shadow, the spotlight was on her with every single step. Crown Prince Muhammad’s kind donation enabled her to buy the necklace she wore, which gleamed in the lights as a representation of grace and poise. But despite the cheers and kind smiles, she could feel the strain beneath them. Years of trucking around the golf world and enduring with her husband had sharpened her instincts, and it turned out that her hunch was correct when she found Yong-gook and Jang Tae-ra in a bind. “You shouldn’t have been caught,” she said, quietly and simply, her face revealing nothing of the emotion that she must be feeling. Wan-soo challenges her powerful mother-in-law, Park Mi-ran, and finds out that the affair was a plot to get a divorce, thus escalating the long-standing animosity between them. Wan-soo fights back the deceitful tactics of Mi-ran stating that she plans to stay married and warns Mi-ran not to meddle with her philanthropic work. The confrontation, charged with tension, brings to the fore the never-ending power struggle in the Hwain family and also brings to light Wan-soo’s remarkable courage and smartness.
Wan-soo’s early childhood is then shown in a cinematic flashback, which reveals the foundation of her tenacity. Due to a small error, her mother, a caddie at a nearby golf club, is wrongfully dismissed by the future chairwoman of the Hwain Group. She borrows Kim Yong-gook’s immaculate golf clubs for Wan-soo in secret because she is furious and wants to provide her daughter a better life. Wan-soo embarks on a career in professional golf after this audacious deed, training nonstop until she wins a world championship. No doubt that Wan-soo has become successful but that success comes with a fee-the gambling addict of a mother who is through with the winnings and thus broke her ties with her only family making for a very independent, self-sufficient and uncompromising woman.
Wan-soo makes an awkward exit back to her house, rattled and drunk off the day’s emotional rollercoaster ride, while today in the present, tension runs high. There to protect her is Seo Do-yoon, who is forever on the defense. Unspoken fear hangs in the air and it seems like every corner is a source of danger. Do-yoon pricks up when he finds a picture frame on a table in this peaceful yet tense scene. Digging through it he finds an SD card with crucial video evidence of his deceased friend Joo-hyuk. The video rapidly builds suspense by revealing how Yong-gook’s father died and how past tragedy indirectly leads to new peril.
As Do-yoon’s eyes widen in awareness of the finding, he grasps the SD card. Nothing can be heard, except rustling curtains, a car from faraway and the faint murmur of city life outside as his focused face is photographed. The threat hanging over Wan-soo is unresolved as well, and she’s still clueless about what all of it means. And as the cliffhanger, ends the episode, Do-yoon finding that SD card and now with that chilling implication that there could be more evil secrets and drama to come, it keeps us on our toes.
Episode 3: Family Secrets Come to Light
Episode 3 continues with Seo Do-yoon trying to understand the truth behind the danger surrounding Oh Wan-soo. After watching the video found on the SD card, he becomes convinced that her recent attack may be connected to the Hwain Group. He talks about his late friend, Ju-hyuk, with Wan-soo and informs about the case that they were researching before his death. Wan-soo pays attention but remains alert because she does not want to blame anyone without grounds i.e. proper evidence.
The story then goes back two years and shows Do-yoon and Ju-hyuk working together on a secret investigation. They were looking into suspicious financial activities involving powerful people. During their investigation, Ju-hyuk became interested in the Hwain Group and the mysterious death of Chairman Kim Duo. His death eventually leaves Do-yoon determined to discover what really happened.
Back in the present, Wan-soo faces another painful situation when Chairwoman Park decides to bring Jun-hee, Yong-guk’s illegitimate son, into the family. She is even more shocked when she discovers that Jun-hee’s belongings are being moved into her late son Chan-hee’s room.
Unable to deal with everything happening around her, Wan-soo leaves the house. Do-yoon follows her and takes her to the beach. Eventually, they reach the holiday home, where Yong-guk has already shown up. His argument with Wan-soo becomes more and more awkward, but as Do-yoon catches up with them, he quickly intervenes. Wan-soo then asks Do-yoon to take her away, which is a sign that she starts to prefer him to everyone else.
Episode 4: Wan-soo Fights Back
Episode 4 picks up with Do-yoon quietly following the clues he has been collecting. He sneaks into the Hwain Group’s security area and manages to copy some CCTV footage. His investigation soon gives him another reason to be suspicious when he sees Yong-guk handing a large amount of money to Park Kyeong-ju. The money is later linked to people connected to the Manila gang. Yong-guk cautions Do-yoon to avoid Wan-soo, however, the directive drives Do-yoon to seek the truth about what is happening.
In the meantime, Wan-soo is fighting her own war within the Hwain household. Chairwoman Park wants greater control over the NOW Foundation, but Wan-soo refuses to give up the organization she has built over the years. She decides to fight back using the information about Yong-guk’s affair and Jun-hee.
While Mi-ran makes every effort to prevent Wan-soo from approaching the journalists, Wan-soo manages to find a way to speak on her behalf at the conference. In an unexpected twist, Wan-soo does more than just explaining herself to the present crowd. She announces that Jun-hee is the late Chairman’s son, which makes him Yong-guk’s brother. Her statement leaves the Hwain family with a serious new problem.
Later, Wan-soo makes her position clear to Mi-ran and warns her not to interfere with the NOW Foundation. She also tells Do-yoon why she has chosen to remain in her marriage. There is something she is waiting to uncover before she can finally walk away.
Do-yoon shares his own suspicion with her that someone within Hwain could be connected to the attack on her. However, Wan-soo soon learns of another devastating news that Mi-ran has broken to her that she has sent her ill mother to a mental hospital. The news disturbs Wan-soo, and she quickly leaves to find out what she would discover when she arrives.
Episode 5: A Painful Goodbye
In Episode 5, Wan-soo’s mother is visiting her at the mental institution, and this visit brings back many bad recollections of the past. Her mother confesses about all the wrongs she has committed due to the addiction. Even though Wan-soo suffered from this burden for a long time, she remains with her mother during this visit. After that, she has to deal with the loss of her mom. Chairwoman Park forces her to attend an important meeting involving Chinese ambassadors and a major duty-free business investment. Wan-soo wants to stay for her mother’s funeral, but Mi-ran uses her influence to make sure she attends the meeting.
Eventually, Wan-soo gets the chance to give her mother a proper farewell. She takes her mother’s ashes and leaves with Do-yoon. During the journey, Wan-soo finally opens up about the death of her son, Chan-hee. Do-yoon quietly stays beside her instead of trying to force her to talk. This difficult moment brings them closer and makes Wan-soo trust him even more.
At the same time, Do-yoon continues investigating Ju-hyuk’s death and the mysterious death of Chairman Kim Duo. He visits the Eight Star gang’s casino while following clues about the people connected to the attacks. His investigation also leads him to look more closely at Park Kyeong-ju.
Wan-soo asks Do-yoon to continue searching for the person behind the threats against her. She is no longer willing to simply remain silent.
Just when things seem to settle down, Wan-soo and Do-yoon come under attack while returning from an event with children. Gunfire suddenly erupts around them, leaving both in serious danger.
Episode 6: The Attack and the Ledgers
Episode 6 opens just after the horrifying attack on Wan-soo and Do-yoon. They attempt to flee, but drones pursue the vehicle. Do-yoon drives frantically to shake off the pursuers, but one of the drones latches on to the car.
Things take a turn for the worse. Their car gets involved in an accident and rolls over, trapping Wan-soo, Do-yoon, as well as another bodyguard inside. The attacker who is in constant contact with the security team abandons the victims, thinking that they will not make it out alive.
Do-yoon regains consciousness at last. He pulls Wan-soo out of the wreck. Before escaping, the car explodes, badly hurting Do-yoon. The three characters are admitted to hospital, where To-yoon is having emergency surgery. The danger is far from over. The attacker tries to come nearby Do-yoon again but fails.
As Wan-soo wakes up, she is mainly worried about him. Later she visits the guy and expresses her gratitude towards him for saving her life. The scenes show that the relationship between those two characters has changed significantly.
Meanwhile, the Hwain Group tries to control the situation. Mr. Han attempts to make the authorities blame the attack on ISIS so that the company can avoid further damage to its reputation. Do-yoon secretly obtains CCTV footage and continues investigating.
Wan-soo also starts looking for the original NOW Foundation ledgers. When her brother refuses to help, she asks Do-yoon to retrieve them from Mr. Han. He secretly enters the property and finds the documents.
However, prosecutors soon arrive at the foundation with warrants for Wan-soo’s brother Hyun-soo, accusing him of embezzlement. The episode ends with the NOW Foundation facing another serious crisis.
