Episodes Summary

Episode 1: The secret beginning

The premiere episode kicks off with turmoil and incredulity. A furious mob faces a lady who is heavily bruised, is in handcuffs, and is shouting to get her name as she is asking for help. The mob is shouting Lady Ok and throwing at her the charges of naughtiness and lies. They refer to her as a woman owning two husbands, a servant pretending to be a lady, and a deceiver. The image vanishes when a stone is thrown directly at her face, and the plot returns to the very start.

A couple of years back, the most hard-hearted noblewoman of Joseon, Kim So-hye, hired a pretty girl named Gu-deok to work as a slave. The house is massive and silent but wickedness is present in every nook and corner. Gu-deok, who So-hye jocularly calls a “maggot,” absorbs all the lashes of cruelty meant for the others in the master’s house. But Gu-deok’s eyes, nevertheless, are always fashionable. She has an excellent photographic memory and she copies books by candlelight during the nights.Although it’s illegal for a slave to work, it’s her covert way out. In an attempt to purchase independence for herself and her sick father, she conceals the money she makes. Her solitary, heartbreakingly basic wish is to live long enough to pass away by the sea rather than at the hands of a master.

In the meantime, Song Seo-in, a nobleman renowned for his generosity and passion for art, is observed leading a refined but restless life. Compared to the other men in his class, Seo-in prefers to read poetry than brandishing a sword. Although he doesn’t particularly enjoy his arranged marriage to So-hye, his parents are happy with it. Soeddong, his devoted servant, is always making fun of him and calling him a dreamer who is living in the wrong era.

Seo-in sneaks out in servant clothes one day to visit the bazaar, where life hums and color bursts. He happens to run into Gu-deok there, who is selling peanuts to earn a few pence. The first meeting between them is rapid but not to be forgotten. The girl is daring, smart, and not aware that she is speaking to a lord. When later on she sees him as he really is, she gets scared. To her surprise, though, Seo-in listens. The two talk about books and freedom in an open and quiet manner. Before leaving, he gives her a small ruby. Gu-deok has never experienced such kindness.

So-hye becomes envious after learning that Seo-in had met a slave girl at the market. At the engagement ceremony, Seo-in, putting on her the mistreatment of the maids, speaks out. His public announcement of the engagement’s termination is a result of his extreme firmness. So-hye claims Gu-deok lured her, and she is in a rage, feeling degraded and infuriated.

Gu-deok gets pummeled until she can hardly breathe that evening. Gu-deok decides to live after So-hye’s father proclaims that she would be his concubine. She stabs him and flees into the snow with her father when he tries to force himself on her. They are chased across the forest by slave hunters. Her father leaves her at an inn in the severe weather because he thinks he will only lead to her capture. Broken but undaunted, Gu-deok trades the jewel for a place to stay the night and begins working at the inn.

One year has passed. One chilly morning, Lady Ok Tae-young and her father lead an aristocratic group from Qing. By nature, Tae-young is an extroverted, super caring and ever curious person. She is very nice to Gu-deok from the beginning. Their lives are totally dissimilar but they discover some common points between them. The warm-hearted Tae-young wants to give her help to the poor, while the oppressed Gu-deok just wishes to be a woman of rights and enjoy her freedom in one of the modern societies secretly.

But catastrophe strikes again. Bandits raid the inn and burn it on fire. In the chaos, Tae-young saves Gu-deok’s life, but she herself dies. When Gu-deok opens her eyes, the majority think that she is the noble lady owing to the legacy ring that is still on her finger. However, due to her being tired, feeling guilty, and fighting for her life, she lets the misunderstanding continue.

Towards the end of the episode, Gu-deok—who has now changed to silk—confronts the matriarch of the Ok family. Her gaze reveals a conflict of emotions consisting of fear and resolve. As the music intensifies and the camera stays on the slave girl’s quivering lips, we understand that she has just stepped into a new life which may either be a curse or the long-awaited liberation.

Episode 2: Her new identity

The second episode opens with ashes and smoke. Once humming with laughter, the inn is now in ruins. Gu-deok opens her eyes to find burning bodies all around her, trembling and coughing. There is just quiet when she calls out for Lady Ok Tae-young. Gu-deok sobs when she notices the noblewoman’s body laying close by. A jade ring on Lady Ok’s dead hand represents her great birth. Unaware that this will be the pivotal moment in her life, Gu-deok dazedly sets it on her own finger.

Local authorities and military soon show up to look into the massacre. They mistake her for the noble Lady Ok after noticing the ring and the exquisite silk robe that Tae-young had worn to keep Gu-deok safe. Gu-deok is sent to the capital for medical attention after becoming weak and unable to talk effectively.

The matriarch Grandmother Han is relieved to see her “granddaughter” alive at the opulent Ok family estate, but she is perplexed by her altered personality. Grandmother Han silences Gu-deok when she attempts to confess the truth, which is that she is only a servant who escaped the fire. “If you are not Lady Ok, then our family is dishonored and she is truly dead,” she cautions. Gu-deok consents to keep up the lie out of fear and confusion.

Grandmother Han informs the family that Lady Ok suffers from memory loss as a result of head trauma in order to allay suspicions. Mak-sim, a devoted maid hired to mentor her, is the only one who is aware of the truth. Gu-deok struggles to walk, bow, and speak politely as he fumbles through courses on noble manners. She sleeps on silk sheets and eats good meals for the first time, although being troubled by her history as a slave.

The astute and arrogant relative Madam Song becomes wary. Her hands are too harsh for a noblewoman, and she thinks Lady Ok’s behavior is peculiar. Lady Ok’s younger brother, Chan-young, starts to appreciate her kindness and intelligence when she assists him with his studies. Gu-deok, plagued by remorse, surreptitiously reports the pilfered Qing gifts she witnessed during the attack on the inn to the local magistrate. Her statement aids in apprehending the bandits who killed Lady Ok. The Ok family celebrates when they learn of their imprisonment because they think “Lady Ok” has avenged her own tragedy. Gu-deok’s self-defense fabrication has now reinforced her phony identity.

A few weeks later, Gu-deok gains recognition for her charitable work, but when her maid Baek-yi is discovered dead under dubious circumstances, the tranquility is shattered. Gu-deok confronts everyone and says, “My name is Ok Tae-young,” refusing to remain silent. She is now the real Lady Ok; the shy servant has vanished.
