- The glory
The Glory raised the bar in revenge dramas. Song Hye-kyo’s character Moon Dong-eun was subjected to the worst form of bullying in her school which made her life a living hell. She’s finally able to go on the offensive and get revenge from the people who mistreated her so badly back then after all these years. Everything was meticulously choreographed, the writing was brilliant, and the emotions were pure . That’s not just vengeance, it’s a look at trauma and resiliency and justice. Its ghastly pace, hallucinatory narration, and Killer instincts allowed The Glory to travel the world and spark conversations on morality and bullying. A bizarre kind of surreal dramedy, this odd TV show will stick with you long after the final credits roll.
- The Good Bad Mother
The Good Bad Mother has surfaced a heart-wrenching story of an unique mother-son relationship. The role of a strict yet warm mother played by Ra Mi-ran who makes her son look back at the real world when he loses his memory. Lee Do-hyun was really well cast as the son, as he was able to use that innocence to start relearning life throughout the emotional performance. The tragicaglia (tragicomedy) was so relatable in this drama. The audience came to realize that a mother’s love, no matter how imperfect, is always forgiving and protective. The drama’s immense popularity was a result of its sincerity and emotional appeal and so it became one of the best dramas of the year.
- Celebrity
Celebrity peeled back the glossy surface of influencer culture and revealed the view of its even darker side. Park Gyu-young is Seo Ah-ri, a woman who ascends to prominence only to be caught in a scandalous web of lies, hate, and betrayal. Chic, melodramatic and super-quick, the performances could expose the dark side of stardom and the frenzy for validation. The series had the viewers desiring more as it perpetually revealed new – and at times deeper – layers of mystery, without losing the lucidity and importance of its message. If you have even a passing interest in social media, you’ll come away from the film Celebrity mesmerised and entertained by Park Gyu-young’s performance and the movie’s skillful directing.
- See you in my 19th life
See You in My 19th Life was a sweet and heartwarming story about fantasy and love. She was cast as Ban Ji-eum, a woman who can remember all her past lives. While still in prison, she travels in her 19th life to search for the love she lost when she died young in her earlier life. It was an excellent narrative on Destiny, Memories and the strongest power in this world, Connection. The wonderful photography combined with the moving story made just the right mood to inspire breath-taking woe. A very emotional message that “Love never dies indeed” has been delivered with artistic performances of Shin Hye-sun and Ahn Bo-Hyun that made this drama unforgettable.
- Twinkling watermelon
Twinkling Watermelon turned out to be one of the most adorable surprises of 2023. His story is Eun Gyeol, a talented musician who is the son of deaf parents and travels back in time to encounter his father in the 1990s. What ensues is an enchanting ride of dreams, family, and teaching. Eun Gyeol learns through music that his parents are not merely his authority figures, but have also led lives that had hopes and sorrows. The wistful tone of the series’ message, combined with its nostalgic ambiance, resonated with audiences. A coming-of-age tale packed with music, tears, and laughter, it’s a gentle nudge to those family ties we never talk about.
- My Demon
My Demon was a paranormal joy that was romantic, hilarious and visually stunning for fans of fantasy love stories. The drama, also starring Song Kang as a powerful demon and Kim Yoo-jung as a stubborn heiress, chronicled their tense, humorous and deeply emotional contract marriage. With the devil stripped of his powers, he must depend on her, bringing mayhem and surprising love. The visual effects, smart humor and off-the-charts chemistry made every single one of them a joy. My Demon was a narrative about vulnerability, destiny and finding love that goes beyond fear; it was more than just fantasy.
- Little women
The three down-on-their-luck siblings In-joo, In-hye and In-kyung (Kim Go-eun, Nam Ji-hyun, Park Ji-hu) are the protagonists of Little Women. The family needs to decide whether to accept the consequences when a friend of theirs dies and bequeaths one of the sisters a large sum of money. Ethics and ambition, independence and money, and the grey area between good and evil are all at the heart of this series. There is tension between the rich and poor. That show was really so high pressure for me. Some bits, such as when the eldest sister buys a winter coat – itself a metaphor for classism, really – are punch-you-in-the-gut. The youngest sister is asked by a character if she would betray the people she loves, in a situation that still haunts me.
- Duty After School
Duty After School turned out to be a surprisingly deep human drama/science-fiction mashup. In a matter of days aliens have invaded Earth and high school students are conscripted into the military. What begins as fear becomes bravery when they encounter unimaginable dangers as a team. The series did not only focus on survival, but also that of friendship, responsibility, and sacrifice. The fervor of the story which the young actors genuinely captured, kept the audience spellbound. With its heart-pumping action, high emotional stakes, Duty After School became 2023’s most unexpected risk-taking and thought-provoking K-drama, proving that even the youngest can be heroes.
- Mask girl
Mask Girl felt like one of the most daring and unusual K-drama of 2023. This Netflix show follows Kim Mo-mi, an insecure office worker who wears a mask to become an anonymous online sensation. She goes on a dark and twisted journey when after a series of shocking events, she unwittingly enters a world of crime, obsession and battling with who she really is. The portrayals of Lee Han-byeol, Nana, and Go Hyun-jung (who portray different stages of Mo-mi’s existence) were truly astounding. The series explores big questions, including beauty standards, loneliness and the phoniness of society. Mask Girl is a visually dazzling and surprisingly poignant meditation on the pressures of contemporary celebrity and concealed pain — it’s wrapped in this creepy yet oddly beautiful aesthetic.
