Mun Ka Young will play the lead character of Heo Su A in the forthcoming drama “Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid” (working title), according to a July 30 MYDAILY article. She received an offer to star in ‘Whale Star: The Gyeongseong Mermaid,’ and is reviewing the offer,” a source from Mun Ka Young’s agency PEAK J Entertainment said in reaction to the news.
Whale Star The Gyeongseong Mermaid,” which is based on a webtoon that reimagines Hans Christian Andersen’s “The Little Mermaid,” is set in Gyeongseong (modern-day Seoul) in 1926 during Japanese occupation and tells the tale of Su A, a woman who puts her life in danger to protect Kang Ui Hyeon, a man who sacrifices everything for his country.
Heo Su A, a servant from a pro-Japanese household in Gunsan who adores the water and thinks she is a fish, is portrayed by Mun Ka Young in the film. She has a silent respect for a modest existence, even if she is illiterate, has never experienced love, and has no idea what it feels like. But fate takes away her voice the instant she turns her gaze from the water. She becomes obsessed by a thirst for vengeance and finds herself in the position of a silent servant.
According to earlier reports, Choi Woo Shik was in negotiations to portray the male protagonist Kang Ui Hyeon, who works as an independence activist and owns a photo studio. Hyeon specializes in spy photography and codebreaking.
